On May 27 and 28, Albany Elementary School transported audiences “under the sea” with its 2025 Spring Musical, Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. Featuring classic songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl,” the production brought together the talents of Albany’s 5th and 6th grade students, who rehearsed for nearly five months in preparation for four performances.
The production was directed and music directed by Albany music teacher Stephen Zumchak. “This is the fourteenth show I have directed, and it easily ranks as the most challenging and involved production I’ve had the pleasure of working on,” he said. “The students rose to every challenge, always bringing more and more to their characters. I cannot express how proud I am of all of their hard work and dedication.”
The cast included Kendra Garcia (Ariel), Alyna Gonzalez (Prince Eric), Abou Jallow (King Triton), Jeffrey Say (Sebastian), Soph Clarey (Flounder), Lila Kelly (Scuttle), Awa Jallow (Ursula/Sailor), Nejla Veiz (Flotsam/Carlotta), Adna Vincevic (Jetsam/Chef Louis), Victoria Santiago (Grimsby/Gull), Aubree Cloutier (Pilot/Chef), Myat Khant (Seahorse/Gull), Heaven Aviles, Ashley Martinez, Leila Halkic, Ariana Kulovac, Aundrianna Damiano, and Isabella Htoo (Princesses/Chefs), and Sara Delic (Gull/Chef/Sailor).
Student Stage Crew members included Nasir Abdi, Maram Mustafa Adil, Nina Aye, Azemina Basic, Adnan Cajic, Fiona Eh, Aralynn Hernandez, Sophia Hu, Sophia Khiamdavanh, Thar Lue Moo, Gabriella Muniz, and Saint Poung Soe, who managed props, lights, curtains, and scene changes.
The production team also included 5th grade teacher Jessica Wilk, parents Julie Minic and Lisa Kelly, Watson Williams reading teacher Elizabeth Zumchak, and library assistant Luz Velasco. Costumes were created by local seamstress Carmen Perritano, with additional props and set pieces contributed by Homer Jr./Sr. High School, Sam Herwood, Laura Root, Melissa Campos, Lindsay Haskins, Janette Martinez, Kathleen Infante, and Mr. Zumchak.
Bravo to the entire Albany Elementary community for a magical, memorable performance that brought the house down.
