On September 11, Watson Williams Elementary School held a special ceremony to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, honoring the victims, heroes, first responders and volunteers who stepped forward during one of our nation’s most difficult days.
Coordinated by Principal Minor and teacher as well as event Chairperson Samantha Testa, the ceremony brought together students, staff and members of the Utica Police and Fire Departments. Students recognized local first responders with heartfelt messages and a special poem honoring courage, service and sacrifice.
Students also received a special visit from K-9 Officer Penny, a police therapy dog who helped highlight the comforting role animals play during times of tragedy.
As part of the commemoration, Watson Williams kicked off its 25 Days of Kindness initiative. For the next 25 days, students will participate in acts of kindness that reflect a lasting lesson of September 11: during difficult times, people come together, help one another and show compassion.
Through remembrance and kindness, Watson Williams is helping a new generation understand the importance of honoring the past while making a positive difference today.
